The customers existing plastic case is re-used, avoiding the need to produce more plastic, and we pay for the old cells to be sent to a specialist recycling company (Tredi NZ) where the nickel and cadmium are recovered and used again. Our business is run with as little waste as practicable.
Often, the cost of new battery packs for tools is quite high and people are tempted to buy a whole new unit instead, creating even more waste. By using Recell, the customer gets a what he or she wants at a much lower price than purchasing a new pack and is less likely to buy a whole new unit. In doing this, older equipment can be kept in use eliminating the need to discard an otherwise perfectly usable tool. It also makes people aware that we cannot keep just throwing everything away, that often there is an alternative. There is no disadvantage to the customer by using our service; it is ‘as good as new’ and costs less, we are a mail-order service, so anyone, anywhere in New Zealand can benefit. Director Tony Millett says their customers are very enthusiastic about what they are doing.
"They're saving money and helping to reduce waste and we are encouraged that they'd rather repair than replace. One of our customers retrieved some power tool batteries from a man who was throwing them away at the transfer station.''
